Special CamNews
As you know, the decline in international student enrolments has resulted in a significant revenue shortfall, and I will continue to advocate with the province regarding our financial situation. While investments made 18 months ago to domestic recruitment efforts have led to more students applying and enrolling at the college, this alone does not fully address our financial challenges. As a result, we must continue to carefully manage our resources and expenditures.
On a positive note, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced an exemption of degree programs at public colleges and institutes from the field of study requirements for post-graduation work permit (PGWP) eligibility. For Camosun, this means international students pursuing any of our bachelor's degrees may be eligible for a PGWP upon graduation. Before this announcement, many of our degree programs did not meet PGWP eligibility due to the field of study requirements imposed by IRCC in October. While we continue to feel the impact of federal immigration policies, this recent update is expected to support the rebuilding of our international student numbers.
In this changing landscape, our priority remains clear: safeguarding the high-quality and affordable programs and essential student supports that define the Camosun experience. Unlike some institutions, Camosun will not cancel programs already underway. Current students can confidently continue their studies without interruption. In some departments, students may find fewer sections of courses scheduled over the coming year. However, we are closely monitoring enrolments each semester and may add capacity as warranted by demand and available resources.
Over the coming months, the college will continue to identify potential efficiencies while preserving the quality of our services. Feedback from students and staff will help inform this work. We remain dedicated to minimizing disruptions and ensuring all student services remain effective, accessible, and timely. We will continue to communicate regularly with you about our progress and the rationale behind necessary adjustments. I encourage you to direct your questions to your workplace leader for information specific to your area.
Your continued support, collaboration, and understanding are greatly appreciated as we navigate these challenging times together and prioritize student success.
